Age Concern East Sussex Care Services

Cookery for Older Men

This service aims to help improve the basic cookery knowledge and skills of older men, enabling them to cook with greater confidence. A typical student may live by himself or act as the main carer for his partner. The course is designed to run over 6 weeks, taking place in the student's own home. A volunteer cookery teacher will, in discussion with the student, devise a programme of lessons to suit his individual needs and skills.

Day Centre Care

Age Concern East Sussex Day Care Centres are located in Heathfield, Catsfield and Hurst Green. Teams of care staff and volunteers offer a warm and friendly environment in which local housebound older people can socialize away from their home situation. Activities provided are both social and therapeutic including outside speakers and agencies visiting to offer additional services. A charge is made for the service, which includes lunch and transport if needed.

Home from Hospital

Our Home from Hospital service operates in Lewes, Wealden and Rother District. The service is offered for up to four weeks and may be in addition to other arrangements that may be made for older people on discharge from hospital. Our volunteers can shop, accompany older people to hospital or doctor's appointments, and introduce them to other activities in their local area or any other help that is required when the service ends.

Toe Nail Cutting Service

For only a small charge, a toenail cutting service is available across the County for the benefit of older people for whom the NHS chiropody service is no longer available. Trained volunteers provide the service in central venues in certain areas or if appropriate will offer a domiciliary service. Referral can be made through the doctor, by individuals or via other statutory and voluntary organisations.

Age Concern local groups

Age Concern East Sussex supports 20 local voluntary Age Concern groups who offer a range of services such as lunch clubs, exercise sessions, visiting service, transport for shopping and outings, bathing, aids to daily living, home care and holidays. Further information is available from our offices in Lewes and Rother.

The following services are exclusively provided through our
Rother office in Battle.

Take Home and Settle

The Take Home and Settle Service works in conjunction with the Accident and Emergency departments at the Conquest Hospital. Age Concern East Sussex care staff accompany home older people who have been treated at A&E Department and who do not require to stay in hospital. The care staff member will take the person home and stay with them for a short while to assist in settling them back into their own environment, ensuring the house is safe and they have food in the house.

Befriending Service

This service, supported by Sussex Police, offers regular visits by a volunteer to isolated older people living alone. Volunteers can also advise on home safety and security measures if appropriate.

Aids to Daily Living

Advice can be given on small aids which make everyday living easier. A range of goods is on display and goods can be purchased from the Rother office. Advice can also be given on walking stick safety.

Home Safety Assessment Service

On request, trained volunteers carry out a risk assessment of an older person's home to help them reduce the risk of falling. The service works closely with the primary care teams.

NHS Hearing Aid Battery Exchange

Batteries from NHS Hearing Aids can be exchanged at the Rother office on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 12 noon.
